Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, Louis Michel

- Niels Lillelund

Clean, fresh, driven and with great purity, this balances soft, ripe peach fruit, a dash of lemon/lime zest and a saline character on the very long finish. Super concentrated, elegant and precise, this restrained, less showy, Les Clos will be exceptional in 5-10 years. Louis Michel's plot lies in the western part of Les Clos, halfway up the slope on blue clay soils. - Andy Howard MW

The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has quite an intense lime-scented bouquet flanked by orange blossom and pressed white flowers. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening and notes of almond and spice. After 30 minutes, that spiciness seems to become accentuated, though it just does not quite manifest the persistence that this Les Clos deserves. - Neal Martin

The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos has turned out nicely, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, confit lemons, pear and orange blossom. It is full-bodied, elegantly muscular and textural, with fine depth at the core, ripe but succulent acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is the broadest-shouldered, most powerful wine in the Louis Michel portfolio. - William Kelley

The 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is the most reserved wine in the range, but its quality is already more than apparent. Unfurling in the glass with scents of citrus oil, green apple and iodine and framed by a deft touch of smoky reduction, it's full-bodied, deep and broad-shouldered, with immense concentration, a multidimensional but tight-knit core, racy underlying acids and a long, searingly mineral finish. This will demand some patience, but it will be worth it. - William Kelley

The Clos is excellent this year, opening in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, Meyer lemon, wet stones and a smoky framing of light reduction. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and powerful - the most powerful of Michel’s grand cru bottlings - with intense, chalky minerality, superb depth, tensile acids and a long, vibrant finish.

Aromas of lemon oil, mandarin, honeycomb, iodine and leesy reduction introduce the 2016 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, a full-bodied, multidimensional wine with excellent energy, concentration and chewy extract. It's the deepest and most reserved of all the wines in the cellar, and it will demand a few years of bottle age. - William Kelley

Healthy pale-medium yellow. Musky lime zest, hazelnut and minerals on the nose, with a suggestion of riper fruits. The most complex of these 2016s in the mouth, displaying lovely breadth, refinement and inner-mouth energy to its rich yellow fruit and mineral flavors. A crushed stone quality gives firmness and cut to the wine's long finish. Really spreads out and vibrates on the lively back end. Nicely done. - Stephen Tanzer

Light-medium yellow. Pure, inviting aromas of white peach, apple, lime zest, white flowers and white pepper. Juicy but reticent in the mouth, with its concentrated white peach, citrus and floral flavors accented by mint and salty minerality. Finishes pure and long, with a captivating light touch. According to Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel, there was no hail damage here as the estate's vines are situated in the western half of Les Clos, which was mostly unaffected. This fruit was picked on September 6, which had been the forecasted harvest date even before the big storm hit. - Stephen Tanzer
