Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, mineral- and smoke-accented black and blue fruit, potpourri, olive and vanilla aromas acquire a spicy nuance as the wine opens up. Offers densely packed cherry-cola, cassis and blueberry flavors that show excellent clarity and a smoky top note. Finishes impressively long, youthfully chewy and spicy, with building tannins and a suave, lingering candied violet note. 50% new oak. - Josh Raynolds
Guigal's full-bodied 2019 Hermitage delivers classic notes of roasted meat, raspberries and cherries. Slightly open-knit and even a touch coarse in texture, it looks to be a relatively quick-maturing example of this storied appellation. - Joe Czerwinski
The 2012 Hermitage was bottled late last year and offers a very classic, slightly backward profile with notes of crushed rocks, black currants, graphite, chocolate and spice. It’s certainly enjoyable today, but this medium to full-bodied effort will be better in 4-5 years and drink well for a decade after that.
There's no Ex Voto red in this vintage, so that wine has been blended into the 2016 Hermitage. The result is a firm, sturdy wine that needs some time to come around. Cedar and dried spices mark the nose, while the palate is fleshed out by cherry and espresso notes. Full-bodied and supple on the mid-palate, it tightens up considerably on the finish, ending with firm, dusty tannins. - Joe Czerwinski
