The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster like the Mitans, but has an earthier bouquet than the Champans or Mitans, mulch and autumn leaves infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with good depth, although this is one cuvée where I feel the whole cluster dominates the finish in lieu of terroir expression. - Neal Martin

Vinified entirely with whole clusters, de Montille's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds delivers a lovely bouquet of orange rind, dark berries, peonies, baking chocolate and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, this is a lively and serious wine, underpinned by a muscular chassis of rich, powdery tannin. - William Kelley

Here the nose is slightly more complex than the Mitans if not quite as elegant with its cool and restrained nose that is also quite floral and spicy. There is excellent volume and concentration to the markedly rich and relatively full-bodied flavors that are perhaps the most mineral-driven of all the wines in the range. The supporting tannins are firm but not hard though there is just a hint of dryness on the otherwise balanced finish. - Allen Meadows

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Taillepieds, which is one-third whole cluster and raised in 30% new oak, has the most elegant bouquet of de Montille’s Volnays with mineral rich red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a keen thread of acidity and superb salinity toward the marine-influenced finish. Probably the pick of the Volnay wines from the domaine in 2013, and possibly the most complete, even if it cuts off a little abruptly. - Neal Martin

Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well. - Stephen Tanzer

One-third whole bunch (they had to de-stem lots because of hail damage), 30% new oak. Gravel on limestone. Very deep crimson. Racy and lively and with a full spread of fruit across the palate. Really rather gorgeous. - Jancis Robinson
