Cairanne Haut Coustias, l'Oratoire St. Martin

"This is one of the most highly respected estates in the southern Rhone. Almost every insider speaks of Oratoire St. Martin, as an example of a perfectly managed, impeccably manicured vineyard as well as meticulous winemaking," Robert Parker.
Top Biodynamisk ejendom i Cairanne.

Bottled in May 2019, the 2016 Cairanne Haut Coustias is a tour de force from this small domaine. Hints of cracked pepper and licorice accent black cherries on the nose of this medium to full-bodied wine, while the palate is silky, rich and complex. This has it all: balance, length, intensity and complexity, with star anise and blackberries coming through in waves on the finish. It should drink well for a decade or more. - Joe Czerwinski

The 2015 Cairanne Haut Coustias was still in foudre during my late-August 2017 visit, where it will stay a full two years. A blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah, it was slightly closed and difficult to evaluate, showing hints of wet stones, raspberries and spice. There's plenty of concentration, so if it emerges from its current funk, my rating may even look slightly conservative. - Joe Czerwinski

Just now being released, the 2011 Cairanne Haut Coustias is a blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 20% Grenache that comes from 65-plus year-old vines and sees upwards of two years in Burgundy barrels. Less concentrated than the 2012, yet more elegant and seamless, with overflowing Provencal character in its berry fruits, Provencal herbs, saddle leather and spice aromas and flavors, this beauty has fine tannin, impeccable balance and the class to evolve nicely through 2021. - Jeb Dunnuck

(aged for two years in large, old wooden foudres): Bright ruby-red. Highly aromatic scents of ripe dark fruits, candied lavender and Indian spices, complemented by hints of garrigue and licorice. Sappy, appealingly sweet and expansive on the palate, showing impressive focus and thrust to the intense boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors. Finishes on a gently tannic note, displaying outstanding energy and leaving behind a suave floral pastille note
