Riesling Gaisberg Erste Lage 2016, Gobelsburg

    95 p. James Suckling

Great lemon, white peach and spice aromas are married to a medium body with a hint of creamy richness at the front. Then comes the austere finish with a ton of mineral power. Drink now and for some years to come.

    94 p. Falstaff

    92-93 p. Wine Advocate

The 2016 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW is a Kamptal Riesling from the Kammerner Gaisberg and has a dense and concentrated nose with fresh lemon and vegetal aromas of green asparagus intermixed with peppery and crystalline flavors. On the palate, this is a pure, dry, straight, finessed and beautifully salty Riesling that doesn't have any flesh or sugar grams on its bones. It is a highly delicate, pure and elegant Gaisberg with a great grip. It is an enormously stimulating and refreshing Riesling. A great Riesling not just for Riesling freaks. Tasted as a sample in June 2017. At this price you can hardly get any better Riesling than Gobelsburg's Gaisberg or Bründlmayer's regular Heiligenstein. - Stephan Reinhardt

    95 p. Wine Enthusiast (2015)

Ripe Amalfi lemon and the savory peel of still-green Seville oranges make for a heady alluring flavor combination. The same notions also beguile on the palate where they become even more intense. All of this is delivered in a powerful but compact parcel of exquisite cleanliness. This encapsulates the Austrian virtue of precise pleasure perfectly.

    93-94 p. Vinous (2015)

Where its Heiligenstein counterpart was luscious, soothing and florally perfumed, this Gaisberg is sharply focused and transparent to invigorating impingements of lime zest, white pepper, and stone. Its concentration of floral and green herbal elements takes a high-toned and palate-penetrating Chartreuse-like form. A fundament of white peach and lime guarantees lusciousness as well as refreshing primary juiciness. The finish is unusually sharp and vibrant for the vintage, and it will be fascinating to follow this wine’s fortunes in bottle. - David Schildknecht

    17,5 p. JancisRobinson.com (2015)

Cork closure. Intense and slightly smoky lemon and lime fruit but with an 'Austrian' peppery quality to it. Bone dry, paper-fine, stony texture. Finesse and great length. More restraint than many wines in this vintage but no lack of depth or length. - Julia Harding

    92+ Wine Advocate (2015)

The 2015 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW shows an intense and well-concentrated nose of ripe (and overripe?) Riesling berries and stewed stone fruits. On the palate this is a lush and aromatic but pure and very elegant Gaisberg whose richness and mango fruit is well structured and fresh. The long and kicking finish is intensely fruity but also stimulatingly piquant and salty. - Stephan Reinhardt

    94 p. Vinous (årgang 2014)

On the nose come intimations of crushed stone that, along with smoky, ore-like undertones and a sweet-saline, iodine-laced savor akin to shrimp-shell reduction and oyster liquor, lend intrigue to the luscious fruitiness of apple, white peach, kiwi, grapefruit and lime. This positively bursts onto the palate, yet for all of the ensuing invigoration, the lushness and satiny feel point to the positive aspects of a brush with botrytis. The sensationally sustained finish is downright reverberative. It seems little short of miraculous that this wine outperforms even its illustrious 2013 predecessor. - David Schildknecht

    92-93 p. Wine Advocate (årgang 2014)

The 2014 Riesling Gaisberg 1ÖTW opens very clear, fresh and spicy on the concentrated and piquant nose, white peach skins, pineapples and lemon peels. This Riesling is intense, juicy and piquant, with grip and a firm structure. It has nice tannins, is very elegant and pure, but with concentrated fruit, firm flesh, good grip, good length and structure. This is excellent. - Stephan Reinhardt

    17 p. Jancisrobinson.com (årgang 2014)

Crystalline rock. Starts with a light smoky reductive note and the fumy herbal quality, possibly of spontaneous fermentation. Direct, both citrus and herbal. Super-crisp and dry on the palate, much more primary citrus than on the nose. A complete baby in this respect. Mouth-watering finish and impressive length – tastes not quite bone dry on the finish. I think this will integrate better with a little longer in the bottle. - Julia Harding MW

    93 p. Wine Enthusiast (årgang 2014)

A very subtle nose gives a mere glimpse of lemon zest, the palate delivers a thrillingly pure and exquisitely honest flavor that suggests clear mountain lakes and clean Alpine air. This is bracing and fresh, delicate and lemon-scented from the first sniff to the last echoing aftertaste. This could be dangerously addictive with its concentrated but ultraslender features. - Anna Krebiehl MW

    92-94 p. Falstaff (årgang 2014)

Helles Grüngelb. Silberreflexe.
