Alfred Gratien, Champagne
"I have always been of the opinion that champagne should be to wine what haute couture is to fashion." Alfred Gratien.
(45% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir; 8 g/l dosage; L14198): Light, bright orange. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of pomegranate, raspberry and tangerine, plus a suave note of smoky lees. Bitter rhubarb and cherry skin flavors give way to softer, sweeter raspberry in the mid-palate, with gentle minerality adding spine and lift. Packs a solid punch but comes off surprisingly lithe for its power. Finishes with excellent clarity, a subtle vanilla quality and strong mineral-driven persistence. In the context of top-drawer pink Champagne this bottling always delivers outstanding value. - Josh Raynolds
Dusky pink in color, Alfred Gratien's Brut Rosé – in this case a blend of Chardonnay (52%), Pinot Noir (3 %) and Pinot Meunier (17%) based on 2010 (80% plus 20% Réserve wines) – shows a very clear, fresh and refined bouquet of aromatic red berries, cherries, and brioche along with chalky and floral flavors. The attack on the palate is pure, straight and elegant, and the cuvée reveals a lot of crispy freshness, grip and livelines. Provided with a very delicate foam, this finesse-full and well structured wine goes well as an aperitif but also with food, fish for example. The wine was fermented in barrels with no malolactic. - Stephan Reinhardt
