Cabernet Sauvignon Royale, Koyle

The 2018s are fresher than the 2017s, and the 2018 Royale Cabernet Sauvignon, which contains 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot (different to previous years), feels complex, fresh, elegant and balanced. There is concentration and power in this wine but also balance and energy, surely the result of very good farming. Nevertheless, they are certified in organic and biodynamics. 78,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020.

The 2011 Royale Cabernet Sauvignon from the first and second terraces from their vineyard where the soil is a mixture of clay and granite, is blended with a small percentage of Merlot and Petit Verdot. It has a ripe nose of red and black fruit with impressive floral notes (Cristobal thinks the red fruit and strawberry aromas come from the Merlot this year) with some minty tones and faint aromas of paprika. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained, polished tannins and typical notes of cedar wood and tobacco, with moderate acidity. It’s a fruit-forward, juicy and hedonistic Cabernet. - Luis Gutierrez

The 2014 Royale Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the terraces number two and three from their vineyards in Los Lingues. It's always blended with a small percentage of other grapes, this year with Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Some full clusters (30%) were used for the spontaneous fermentation, and it matured in oak barrels for 22 months. This is very harmonious, classic and elegant, with subtle aromas and a serious palate, with no sweetness and a verticality that makes it very fresh and long. This is a very complete Cabernet with a mineral feeling to it, with some classical notes of cedar wood and good natural acidity. - Luis Gutierrez

Bright purple. Ripe cherry, candied rose, black pepper and pipe tobacco on the powerfully scented nose. Plush, sweet and expansive in the mouth, with intense dark berry and bitter cherry flavors becoming sweeter with aeration. Shows very good energy and lift on the clinging, spicy finish. - Josh Raynolds
